4 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

A grade assignment. Keystone Species are the biotic factors of an ecosystem that portray a vital role in maintaining a functional ecosystem. The Australian Sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) controls the population of many animals in its ecosystem, making it a keystone species. This species of sea lion is found only in Australia and is one of the most endangered pinnipeds in the world. Amassing in colonies along the South Australian and Western Australian coastlines, the Australian Sea lion (ASL) was relentlessly hunted until the 1920s and the population has never recovered (Australian Geographic, 2014). With collaboration between the local community, government agencies and international groups such as biologists and scientists, the Australian Sea Lion Management Strategy (AFMA's) was introduced in 2010 (Anon, 2018). With numerous strategies to recover the breeding colonies, factors such as economic considerations will limit or influence the directions taken to save this species.
