MGB200 Perceived Organisational Support

MGB200 - Managing People

6 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

The social exchange theory and norm of reciprocity can be used to describe the communication and behaviours between actors and the way in which one is rewarded or acknowledged for their positive contributions (Yan, Wang, Chen, & Zhang, 2016). The norm of reciprocity rationalizes the basic principal in human society that those who behave righteous will be rewarded and those who do not will be punished (Perugini, Gallucci, Presaghi, & Ercolani, 2003). In order to make reciprocity an important vehicle for conveying value, it is generally required voluntarily and without formal agreements (Molm, Schaefer, & Collett, 2007). The social exchange theory corroborates this principle as it proposes that social behaviour is dependent on an exchange process, the behaviour is determined on the positive or negative exchange which occurs (Birtch, Chiang, & Van Esch, 2015). These psychological theories have been linked for decades to explain the social behaviours of humans in day to day situations but most commonly to understand the interactions and relationship between seniors and subordinates in the workplace (O’Driscoll & Randall, 1999; Kurtessis, Eisenberger, & Ford, 2017). Social exchange and the norm of reciprocity are two theories that are used to most effectively to describe perceived organisation support, the subject matter of this journal article (Kurtessis, Eisenberger, & Ford, 2017; Rhoades & Eisenberger, 2002).
