Although the genre of theatre that audiences have witnessed throughout the ages changes in coherence to the social and political issues of the time, one element has remained consistent in most cases: the presence of a protagonist. The protagonist’s journey drives the plot forward and expresses the themes central to the plot while tying the audience to the play emotionally. There is a common misconception that in order to be influential, the protagonists are always ‘heroes’, when in actual fact, the birth of genres such as modernism and realism saw antiheroic protagonists become just as influential and common within the theatrical world. This can be identified easily when comparing two theatrical classics and their protagonist; Aristophanes’ Lysisitrata of the ancient Greek period and Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie of the realism period. Through comparing the journeys and personal qualities of these two protagonists, this essay will identify the distinct differences between the qualities and intended influences of the antihero and hero, and will analyse how these protagonists portray this.
