Assessment 2: Research Essay - Alcopops & Youth Binge Drinking affect on Economy
BSB113 - Economics
9 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Alcohol is a favourite pastime for most Australian’s where approximately 80% of the population over 14 years of age report some level of consumption (AIHW, 2013). However, a growing community concern within Australia indicates the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on not only the individuals but their families and the wider community as well (Bonnie & O’Connell, 2003; Chikritzhs, Padal & Jones, 2014). Particular concern is targeted towards younger people and their high risk drinking known as “binge drinking”, including the violence, injuries and harms to others associated with this behaviour. The Australian youth are starting to drink younger with 80% of 14 year olds have used alcohol (Collins & Lapsley, 2015). 42.6% of 16-17 year old students report that one of the main reasons they drink is to get drunk. 19% of young men between the ages of 18-24 were engaging in binge drinking at least once a week, which was twice as much comparably with men aged over 25 (ABS, 2008). Young women also reported to have the highest rate of binge drinking with 16% reported to regularly drink which is triple the amount of women over 25 (refer to figure 1).
