Ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum
10 Pages • Topic Notes • Year Uploaded: 2023
Pompeii was a city in the ancient Roman empire, located near modern-day Naples in Italy. It was destroyed and buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was founded in the 7th or 6th century BC and was a prosperous trading center due to its location near the Bay of Naples. The eruption of Vesuvius was a catastrophic event that killed thousands of people and preserved the city under layers of ash. In the 18th century, the ruins of Pompeii were discovered and excavated, revealing a remarkably well-preserved snapshot of ancient Roman life. Visitors can now explore the city's streets, homes, and public buildings, including a theater, amphitheater, and bathhouses. The ruins of Pompeii provide valuable insights into ancient Roman society, including its architecture, art, and daily life. The site is a popular tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
