Consumption of alcopops is a high-risk behaviour performed by adolescents in Australia. The objective of this study was to attain greater knowledge of alcopop consumption and its subsequent reinforcing effects through experimentation with rodents. Rats underwent operant conditioning and were allocated to one of three conditions: alcopop, sucrose or water (control). The study took place over four weeks, where rats learnt to press a lever to obtain their administered solution. Results revealed that a strong reinforcement effect exists for alcopops, thus inferring that the simultaneous ingestion of ethanol and sucrose is exceedingly rewarding to humans. Alcopops have become a progressively distressing alcoholic beverage due to its prevalence amongst adolescents and therefore remains a detriment to our population.
