This stigma not only obstructs access to mental health care facilities, but also prevents and hinders the development of efficient mental health institutions and a skilled workforce. The current social setup in Japan, which promotes hard work and community values over self-interest, has led to increasing reported cases of mental illness. Yet, the response to the illness itself is nowhere near what is warranted. This paper argues that the traditional cultural beliefs of the Japanese people prevents the country from focusing on mental health issues, and as a result of this, stigmatization and denial of appropriate treatment and medical services to the mentally ill has continued.
