In developed first world countries we see the effects of climate change at an arms length, discussed in the media and used a political bargaining chip. First world countries are the greatest consumers, driving the demand for more products stemming from fossil fuels such as electricity and petroleum. In contrast it is the small developing island states living a simpler, ‘greener’ life that have the most to lose and who bear the greatest cost. This raises a question, what responsibility do we, the greatest consumers have to securing a sustainable future for these countries? In this essay I look at climatic changes in the Grand Riviere, Trinidad, an example of a small island developing state at risk of physical and socioeconomic damage as a result of a changing climate.
