Reinforcement sensitivity varies greatly between individuals, manifesting in differences in motivational personality traits. A distinction is made between approach learners - those whom are motivated by the incentive of reward, and avoidance learners - those whom are motivated by preventing exposure to punishment. Motor adaptation is crucial for individuals as it provides the nervous system with a flexible control that accounts for temporary changes to a task. Previously motor adaptation has been considered insensitive to motivational feedback, however recent research has suggested otherwise. The aim of the current study was to see if positive reinforcement would affect motor adaptation learning rates, and whether this rate would differ between approach motivated and avoidance motivated learners. 151 undergraduate psychology students participated in the current study, in which ability to adapt to changes in a synchronous bimanual force task in which positive reinforcement (receiving points) was provided. Participants scores were then measured against their approach or avoidance trait scores as measured by the Sensitivity to Reward, Sensitivity to Punishment Questionnaire (SPSQR.) A relationship between total points scored and approach / avoidance traits was found. Approach learners accrued higher scores than avoidance learners, and scores were more predictable than those of avoidance learners. This research would be beneficial when considering optimising physical rehabilitation treatments, for those whom have fallen victim to stroke or brain injuries as well as those undergoing treatments for unspecified reasons.
