Brief Biography (10-65 BCE) • Born into a religiously observant Jewish family of Tarsus, Cicilia (present-day Turkey). • He was a Roman citizen, Hellenistic Jew, Pharisee (saw Christianity as corruption of true religion) • Well-educated under Gamaliel: education in Jewish traditions, Greek literature. • Profound love of Jesus, “...a slave of Jesus Christ.” • The context was a lack of tolerance for new ways and challenges was considered blasphemy. • Very apocalyptic; believed the return of Christ to be imminent. • Conversion: o Persecutor of Church, “I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it.” (Galatians 1:13). o It was a direct, pure divine revelation of grace, “...did not receive it from any man...rather I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.”...
