Contemporary Controversial Issues in Christianity
Studies of Religion I
3 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Euthanasia has been a controversial issue for an awfully long time. The origin of the word “Euthanasia” comes from a Greek word. 'Eu' which means 'easy' and 'Thanatos' meaning ‘death'. Euthanasia therefore means ‘an easy way to death’. Taking the easy way out is not always the right way! Roman and Greek civilisations accepted that a person’s life should not be preserved if the person has no interest in living. Therefore, euthanasia was accepted in the ancient times. However, committing suicide, as well as helping others to commit suicide was considered a criminal act by Western civilization during the 1300's. Euthanasia faced the first direct law against it in New York in the year 1828. Euthanasia like abortion has become a major issue of debate between people for many years and more so in 2020. Contemporary society has categorized Euthanasia into three types: voluntary, involuntary, and passive.
