9 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

Over time gender has been constructed in society, from the very beginning of time. A statement by the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that “Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of woman and men - such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of woman and men. It varies from society to society and can be changed.” (Gender, equity and human rights, 2019) This modern-day definition explores what individuals identify as, and delves into the impacts of gender stereotypes in today’s society. Although a person’s official ‘sex’ is based upon biological features that make up either a man or a woman, ‘gender’ is seen as a more broad term. ‘Gender’ refers to the learnt roles, standards and expectations society has on individuals as a result of their sex (Defining gender stereotypes, 2019). Every level of society, micro, meso and macro levels construct and showcase the portrayal of gender today, through media, family, education and peers. Gender stereotypes are seen to have a significant impact on adolescence’s development of socialisation through studies performed. In order to understand the impact of gender stereotypes concerning socialisation further, I performed specific ethical research methodologies. Through open-ended interviews and close-ended questionnaires, I was able to uncover more about the pressing topic. The subjects studies allowed me to gain access to a diverse range of answers, giving me the best possible information to the study. Ultimately, the cross-generational study has enabled me to assess the impact of gender stereotypes in relation to socialisation.
