Measuring health status: Role of epidemiology Epidemiology: the study of disease in groups or populations through the collection of data and information, to identify patterns and causes. • Used by government and health organisations to understand the health status of the population, identify the causes of disease and analyse how health services and facilities are being used. • Considers patterns of disease in terms of: ⇒ Prevalence: the number of diseases in a population at a specific time ⇒ Incidence: the number of new cases of diseases occurring in a population ⇒ Extent, determinants, indicators • Helps identify: the patterns of health in groups/populations, health needs and allocate resources • Evaluate health behaviours and strategies to control and prevent disease • Identify and promote behaviour that improves health – eating less, exercising • Limitations: does not always show health variations among population subgroups (Non- indigenous vs. indigenous), data on some areas like mental health are incomplete or non- existent, failure to explain why, and do not account for determinants
