The concept of family law is covered in the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) which places legal obligations on certain family members to ensure that the financial, emotional and physical needs of family members are met (also must protect the rights of individuals in families) • Family law must reflect societal values. There has been a shift in society’s values with regard to what constitutes a family. In the past the nuclear family was the dominant socially accepted family form. In modern Australia the concept of family has undergone substantial change - a broader range of family types are now considered to be families.
