P4 Discusses the effectiveness of the legal system in addressing issues. P5 Describes the role of the law in initiating and responding to change. P8 Locates, selects the organises legal information from a variety of sources including legislation, cases, media, international instruments and documents. P9 Communicates legal information using well structured responses. P10 Accounts for differing perspectives & interpretations of legal information and issues. Task Outline - Students are to select a legal issue and complete the following tasks:- Part A - Introduction. i) What is the issue? ii) Why is the issue significant? iii) Who is involved in this issue? Part B– Speeches. You are to select two people who are involved in the issue, who have opposing ideas and attitudes. You are to imagine that these two people are going to address parliament to convince them that reform (change) is necessary in this particular area of the law. Write a speech for each of these two people. In your speeches you need to include:- i) What are the participants attitudes? ii) What is the effect of the issue on the participants? iii) How effectively each participant feels the legal system is currently addressing the issue. iii) What action have they taken? iv) What solutions do they recommend to solve this issue and why do they believe these solutions would work. Part C - Decision. Imagine that you are the Prime Minister and you have just listened to the above speeches. You now need to make a decision in regards to this issue. You will need to state:- i) Your decision in relation to this issue. ii) Reasons for your decision.
