Intimate image abuse refers to the publication and/or distribution of intimate images and videos on online platforms without the consent of the person involved. With technology becoming progressively more prevalent in everyday life, privacy and safety surrounding the sharing of intimate images has become a serious issue; many people may not be aware that that they have fallen victim to such a widespread crime. As technology becomes more easily accessible by the general community, the severity and maliciousness of these cases has followed suit. Deep fakes – the alteration of an intimate video to resemble the face of someone who was not originally involved in the video – can be created by the general public using computer software and mobile apps almost instantaneously. As well as this, the prevalence of intimate images paired with the inability for the victim to remove the images has created the opportunity for perpetrators to attempt to extort money out of victims in exchange for the deletion of their intimate images. A recent Australian study, Sexting and Young People, found that 50% of young people had sent a sexual picture or video of themselves to another person, with Not Just Revenge Porn researchers at Monash University found that 1 in 5 Australians have already suffered from image-based abuse. Technology as a whole has intensified the presence of intimate image abuse in society, with the ability to attain images easily in conjunction with the inability to remove images once they have been released onto the internet creating a widespread security issue.
