Australia’s recent law reforms have been highly effective in recognising issues that arise for same sex couples, and have responded so that these issues are eradicated. Throughout history homosexuals have been heavily discriminated against in almost all aspects of society and have as a result have faced unfair and prejudicial legislation. Under Australia’s old legislation same sex couples faced numerous legal challenges such as failing to recognise their relationships, restrictions in accessing adoption and IVF clinins and a furthermore 85 areas of Federal law that directly discriminated against same-sex couples in areas such as tax, social security and health. Since the early 2000s it has been clear that society’s views and values in regards to same sex couples had drastically shifted and our old legislation was no longer reflect-ant of what society’s values were. The Australia Law Reform Commission (ALRC) recognised that old legislation failed to address same-sex couples needs, and effectively changed legislation so their demands are met.
