How many and whom? Australia is once again booming with culture, but is it a good thing? In a survey of 1026 voters, 54% of them believe that Australia’s rate of population is growing too fast. During 2000, Australia was the country of origin for 6,100 Chinese migrants, and in 2017, Australia had 28,300 migrants. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia’s maximum intake of migrants is 190,000 annually. It hasn’t always been this way. There was a boom from the beginning of the 2000s where Australia accepted 80,610 migrants into Australia in comparison to the current intake. ABS approximates 28.2% of Australia’s residential population is born overseas. Census data illustrates the Chinese population has exponential increase from 25,883 in 1981 to 526,000 in 2016 contributing to Australia’s place as the third-largest migrant group and being accountable for 2.2% of the Australian population. These international migrants come from a range of backgrounds; from unskilled workers to highly skilled professionals. Since 2010, China-born migrants contributed to 15% of migrational intake annually. China has taken 14% are family migrants and 12% are skilled migrants.
