Whether planned or unexpected, the importance of a discovery lies in how it alters our perceptions of ourselves and our world

English (Standard)

2 Found helpful 2 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

An epiphany alters our perception of ourselves and our world because it is a moment of discovery in which our emotions are changed, altering our view of reality. Robert Frost’s 'The Tuft of Flowers' and 'Marigolds' by Eugenia Collier both portray characters who experience self-discovery and self-realisation in the form of epiphanies in relation to flowers as symbols of natural beauty. Beauty of nature is shown as opening the heart and opening up compassion. Literary techniques used include metaphor, simile, imagery, and symbolism. The structural features of the poem are reflected in the short story, and include an ending that is connected with the beginning, and similarities in the progress of a main character toward self-discovery. A comparison is made between the beauty and creative function of Nature and the human tendency to feel separate, and to behave destructively.
