In order to enter new phases of life and new social contexts, individuals must experience some form of transition. The film “Billy Elliot” directed by Stephen Daldry and Joanne Riccioni's short story “You Can't Take the Country out of the Boy” are two texts which explore the experience of transition. They both involve Characters who gain new knowledge about alternative ways to live life and as a result transition into a new phase of life. “Billy Elliot” provides an interesting view of what it is like to be trapped in a phase of life and a social context that is not ideal. At the beginning of the film, Billy is someone who is quite clearly stuck in a life he does not want. He lives in a small mining town, where masculinity and hardness prevail.
