Essay on 'Exploring Interactions' comparing texts 'Romulus My Father' and 'Once apon a time in Punchbowl'

English (Standard)

1 Found helpful 3 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

A breakdown in the interactions between people change the way that they perceive the world they live in. This results in their identity being either developed or reinforced. In the texts Romulus, My Father by Raimond Gaita and the documentary 'Once upon a time in Punchbowl', interactions with others are shown to both develop and challenge one's attitudes and beliefs about oneself and the world. The way they affect perceptions, their culture and others, as well as relationships and society, are explored by means of narrative technique in Gaita's novel, including chapter structure, dialogue and characterisation, as well as throughfilm techniques, including interviews, superimposed films and news footage in the documentary. Characterisation and dialogue are particularly important in Gaitas' novel, as they enable an exploration of the breakdown in communications between individuals and how these interactions can transform or reinforce ones attitudes and beliefs. Both these texts help us to understand the way in which individuals live, interact and communicate in two different social contexts.
