‘Billy Elliot’, and ‘Room’ project transitions into new phases of life and social contexts that impact the characters and the viewer in diverse ways. Both films convey, physical, mental, social and emotional transitions, but in very different contexts and facing diverse impacts. Room, a 17-year-old girl (joy) is abducted and held in her abductors garden shed (Room) for 7 years, joy is sexually abused every night and falls pregnant, she then has a child called jack. Billy Elliot takes the viewer on a journey through the protagonist of the film Billy’s life, during the miners’ strike (1984-1985), in Durham, undertaking harsh socio-economic circumstances. Billy a narrow minded 11-year-old boy’s love for music becomes a challenge, when he ignites his passion for ballet and dance. During this time the gender roles guided the by the social expectation of the time. Billy’s father ‘Jackie Elliot,’ a narrow minded, angry man, who is fighting with the mining strikers, has strong beliefs on what a boy ‘should be,’ this becomes such an obstacle for Billy that he attempts to hide this from everyone around him. Once Billy’s talent is revealed and appreciated it takes him on a physical transition from Durham to the royal ballet school in London, where Billy and all the characters around him change through Billy chasing his dream.
