Characters have become more aware of themselves and their shared human experiences through the telling and receiving of stories. The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Half-hanged Mary by Margaret Atwood shows how humans can become more aware of their human experiences. These two texts convey themes such as fear of the unknown and hysteria, reputation and Irony that challenge the understanding of the audiences and their human experiences. As the crucible is set during 1692 of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts, it enables the responders to show how throughout history humans experiences change and differ from the past to the present. Miller uses historical events such as the Salem witch trials. By using this he shows how human experiences are necessary and shows meaning in a person’s life. This can be linked to Half-hanged Mary as it has similar aspects of human experiences. Throughout the book Miller explores and focuses on the fear of the unknown and hysteria. These themes are shown through stage directions, situations the characters face and the use of techniques. The first scene in the book introduces Betty Paris who is suffering from an unknown illness and Reverend Paris praying besides her. It is soon revealed that
