3 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

Essay studied for the year 11 exam in the module 'Women in Context' - 'A streetcar named desire' The novelist Carol Hunt commented on the 1950s narrative ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by saying ‘women have changed since this book was published as this story is one full of patriarch ideologies and women objectification.’ During the traditional era women should have been compliant, quiet, and dependant on the male. In the opening of the novel we see the protagonist Blanche Du Bois’ costuming involving a ‘white suit with a fluffy bodice’ the stage directions allude to Blanche’s fulfilment of the stereotypical female decorative role. Blanche is characterised as being vastly fragile and dependent on others; emotionally and economically, but for the 1950’s these traits were common to women. The idea of Blanche’s psychological fragility is highlighted by the frequent reference to the alcohol, that she uses an emotional stage prop, ‘she rushes to the closet and removes the bottle; she drinks quickly.’
