Browning’s portrayal of aspects of human weakness such as ownership, jealousy and love contributes to the values he believes are fundamental to the human experience. Robert Browning’s ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ represents the persona as a psychologically unstable man, who craves the possession of his lover, but when faced with the realism of true love, destroys the person who would do anything for him. Similarly, Browning’s ‘My Last Duchess’ tells the story of a possessive Duke, who is wrongly threatened by his Duchess’ innocent personality and warm actions towards other people, which lead him to organise her death. Both texts explore ideas of masculine dominance, and jealousy of your significant other, which Browning explores as human weakness in the enduring values of mankind.
