The 7 Stages of Grieving (T7SOG) by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman is a powerful play about the grief of Aboriginal people and the hope of reconciliation, it reveals tear-streaked tales of tragedy and peels open a dialogue about the issues that separate and unite Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Appropriating western forms whilst using traditional storytelling, it gives emotional insight into Murri life. The play effectively examines the genocidal history of Australia while offering a way forward towards reconciliation and positioning the reader to accept a sense of grieving “must come first” (Enoch, 2002). Mailman and Enoch welcome the audience to reconsider and challenge their preconceived ideas, attitudes, beliefs and stereotypes of indigenous Australians. Language, humour, symbolism and imagery are some of the techniques the authors used to project the didactic message of the play.
