English (Extension 2)
16 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Dracula & The Tempest: The protagonists’ control of the supernatural manipulates ideals of sexuality within their respective eras and reveals an inevitable struggle within characters to move away from the set societal standards concerning sexuality Bram Stoker’s Dracula and William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, through their respective protagonists, aim to represent the sexual conventions and implications of certain ideals of sexuality in their separate contexts, utilising their individual control of the supernatural to achieve this. The nature of the supernatural manifests the usually unfathomable and unknown - both of which originate from the human condition. Due to this, control of the supernatural ultimately leads to revelations concerning human ideologies and understanding which exposes the true nature of individuals within their specific contexts. The idea of sexuality resonates within each of the texts, however, dissimilar between them is their portrayal of this through Elizabethan and Victorian perspectives.
