Intrinsic and extrinsic values motivate humans to behave in a certain way. An individual's behaviour and actions are a reflection of their own morals combined with the values of the society one lives in. Arthur Miller's play ‘The Crucible’ and Brian Percival’s film ‘The Book Thief’ examine how people can be motivated through their inner conflict and the values of their civilisation. The strict theocracy based government of Salem and the intense Nazi government of Germany both hold values that are not publicly approved of by characters such as Rev Hale and Hans Huberman whose moral conscience forces them to question their own beliefs and act on those feelings. Both texts explore the motivations a person can feel because of their own conscience and the actions of their communities.
