Critical Analysis of The Masque of the Red Death

The story “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, is filled with symbolism throughout its entirety. Every character and object seems to symbolize something such as the stages of life, the countdown to death, and even death itself. A story that does this is considered to be an allegory, but, according to Martha Womack, Poe does not intend for this story to be taken as an allegory. She also states that Poe actually discredited the allegorical style of writing because he felt that it distracts the reader from the “singleness of effect” some writers tried to achieve by simply writing a story, even though he openly used it in several of his stories. However, due to the symbolic qualities of everything in the story, it does seem to be an allegory.
