Belonging essay band 6

English (Advanced)

3 Pages HSC - Higher School Certificate Year 12 Essay / Project Year: Pre-2017

Within every individual there is an intuitive human need to belong; an inherent desire which fuels our need to integrate ourselves within the wider world. A person’s experiences and challenges are shaped and influenced by our incessant need to find one’s self, with each struggle being embedded with yearning, leaving a momentous impact on the individual’s life. In Peter Skyzrencki Immigrant Chronicle, in particular the poems (Migrant Hostel, Feliks Skyzrencki, 10 Mary St, and St Patrick’s,) we clearly decipher the constant predicaments that pervade Skyzrencki sense of belonging. These poems explore the struggles that Skyzrencki feels where his understanding of place and relationships lead him to infer his constant solitude. This constant estrangement lead by alienation and enmity forges a ruptured identity, discarding the universal acceptance of belonging within societies as an interwoven tapestry. This animosity is also explored in Edvard Munch’s 1893 painting “Death in the sickroom” where Munch’s expressionist style establishes the isolation perceived among family members, emanating from the inner conflicts within each individual. Through a close study of both texts in light of their continuous struggles, the significance of place is seen to perpetuate an individual’s sense of belonging.
