2 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

An individual’s feeling of acceptance is often influenced by the standards that society places upon them. These standards and expectations can often adversely affect an individual’s way of life and thinking, leading to regrettable and harmful actions. The biographical memoirs of Raimond Gaita in “Romulus, My Father” exemplify the pressure of attempting to conform to a hegemonic society but ultimately being unable to do so because of the high expectations of society. Consequently, “Revolutionary Road” directed by Sam Mendes (2008) describe the life of an everyday couple who were accepted into society due to the alteration of their values. However, this couple lived their lives in regret, wanting to break free from this very sense of conformity and traditionalism. Through the literary and cinematic techniques that these texts impose, the pressure from society to adapt to their standards can be evidently seen.
