“Mistakes are the Portals of Discovery” - Robert Frost and the Secret Garden - Frances Hodgeson Burnett
English (Advanced)
2 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
Use this statement to explore your understanding of discovery in the form of a speech. “mistakes are the portals of discovery” discovery speech - received 18/20. analysis of Robert Frost's poems and Frances Hodgeson Burnett's The secret Garden At times I’m so absorbed in the entirety of my life, their life -- and your life that I’m overwhelmed and sucked into the whirlwind of external emotions. It’s moments like these that one realises the mistake of being disconnected and the role of mistake’s negative connotations on the portal to discoveries; to simply stop and appreciate the world as a collective allows us to respond and embrace the discoveries thrown in our paths. American poet Robert Frost explores the process of discovery and the consequences of being disconnected in his collection of poems. In offering insight to the role of “self” in the human condition Frost explores its effect on our responses and, in turn, discoveries. Likewise, Frances Hodgeson Burnett investigates the process of discoveries in her coming of age novel The secret garden, presenting the vulnerability of childhood and beauty of reconnection in the symbolic garden. With both texts written in the early 1900’s during ww1, change is evident in the composer’s urges to reconnect their readers.
