The Quiet American and Forrest Gump Comparative Journey Essay

User Description:
Graeme Green’s “The Quiet American” written in 1955 and Winston Grooms “Forrest Gump” composed in 1986 both utilize conventions of the journey genre to convey the ways in which journeys extend individuals. Each composers text implements a flashback narrative structure which reflect the ways in which the narrator was challenged and extended through their life journeys. Grooms novel reflect the ways in which Forrest embraced the obstacles of his journey and used them to continue to motivate him to pursue with his dreams and goals. This is contrasted to Greens protagonist of Fowler who is ignorant to the world around him and does not embrace the opportunities that his journey presents to extend himself. Ultimately, both composers unearth to the responder the benefits and challenges that all journeys present and convey the true rewarding nature that the most challenging of journeys can offer.
