Text’s reflect values of their composer’s changing context. These changing views are explored and reflected through Orson Scott Card’s, military science-fiction novel, Enders Game (1985) and Andrew Niccol’s, sci-fi film, Gattaca (1997). Both texts situate themselves within the science-fiction genre, which was influenced by the rise of advancing technology and a fear of unrestrained progress in the late 1900’s due to the aftermath of the USSR Perestroika. Both composers illustrate in their texts that genetic discrimination will inevitably lead to a dichotomy between individualism and collectivism and the burden of perfection.
