The entrenched racism that permeates every aspect of society in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is represented through the prejudicial treatment Tom Robinson receives during his court trial. Directly from the onset of the novel, the social detriments of racism are revealed through the metaphor of “Maycomb’s usual disease”. The word ‘disease’ in this sense attributes negative connotations to Maycomb as a town infected with the sort of blind racism that ultimately results in Tom being unfairly accused of rape. This idea is substantiated through the use of derogatory language in Mr Ewell’s testimony, in which he says “ I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin on my Mayella”, which reiterates the idea of how Tom is racially dehumanised....
