Strengthened by the early 1990s commodities boom, Australia has thus experienced a period of rapid expansion but must remain wary and continually monitor its monetary and fiscal policies, so that its economic objectives are achieved. These objectives include sustaining economic growth, full unemployment and keeping inflation within its target of 2-3%, and their recent stability is proof that the current macroeconomic mix has been overall effective. Monetary policy is a counter-cyclical instrument that influences the cost and availability of money in the market.
