received 19/20 for this essay discussing the relationships of modern theatre As a living art, theatre is a fluctuating, evolving craft, disrupting the theatrical paradigm, Mother Courage (1939) and The Laramie Project (1998) led the contemporary metamorphosis of theatre, subverting the concept of plot to narrative. Encouraging a deeper level of understanding and empathy within our society, this theatre movement was driven by Bertolt Brecht in the early 1900’s and has carried throughout and into the 21st century. Brecht (1898-1956) was a revolutionary, German, theatre practitioner, pioneering a new mode of theatre. His purpose was to make his audience think and has been famously quoted “[theatre goers of his time] hang up their brains with their hats in the cloakroom”. Seeking to change these attitudes in theatre he drew on a diverse range of influences including Marx, Asia and current politics; Brecht sought to create didactic theatre using a range of techniques such as placards, song, alienation and characterisation among many others, it was Brecht who shifted drama from naturalistic and realistic plot to a didactic narrative wherein the audience was made active and responsive. Moises Kaufman similarly challenges his audiences in his documentary styled piece The Laramie Project written in 1998 it explores the tragic murder of a gay college student and its effect on the surrounding community. Using an eclectic mode of drama predominantly inspired by Brecht himself among verbatim, didactic, epic and realistic theatre to wholly encapsulate his challenging and factual portrayal of a renowned murder case, seeking to provoke thought in his minimalistic narrative. Although counterintuitive both Moises and Brecht alienate their audiences throughout their storytelling to effectively connect and communicate with their audiences, thus creating a sense of accountability and responsibility.
