To what extent does continuity and/or change impact the development of personal and social identity in individuals Executive summary: Personal identity refers to how individuals view themselves, social identity is how others view an individual and cultural identity is the feeling of belonging to a group. The extent to which continuity and/or change has impacted the development of personal and social identity can be due to significant agents of socialisation and their impact on different generations. Ethnicity and Culture is a distinctive factor in determining who we are, stated by Anthony Giddens, ethnicity is defined as “The cultural practice and outlooks of a given community of people that set them apart from others” (Giddens, 2006, p.43). The media plays a crucial role in developing and forming ideas and stereotypes of certain ethnicities in its ability to influence ideas, opinions, attitudes and images of the world. It is manifest among significant amounts of secondary research that I have found indicates that the media has changed individual’s perceptions on ethnic minorities over the years and I wanted to find out to what extent this was true.
