Biodiversity is a measure of the variety of all life that is present on earth. Ecologists use biodiversity as a measure of the health of an ecosystem, as it investigates the relationship between abiotic and biotic factors and the distribution and abundance of species present (Carrington, 2018). One such abiotic factor that negatively affects the biodiversity of an ecosystem is habitat loss or destruction. Habitat destruction is the process in which entire habitats are rendered functionally unable to support species, thus reducing the biodiversity of the ecosystem as existing organisms are displaced or destroyed. The main causes for habitat destruction via human impact includes trawling, deforestation, mining, logging, and urban sprawl (Datta, 2018). When a habitat is permanently rendered unable to support species through urban sprawl, without animals such as insects preforming pivotal roles in the ecosystem such as pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient recycling, whilst also providing a food source for larger animals such as birds, bats, fish, amphibians and lizards, the ecosystem collapses, thus resulting in minimal biodiversity (Folk, 2020). Therefore, insects play a pivotal role in maintaining biodiversity.
