Received a 91% Background Research: Enzymes are protein molecules that have catalytic functions (increases the rate of chemical reactions with out being used up) essential to all activity of life and the functioning of organisms (metabolism). All chemical reactions that take place in a living organisms are reliant on the catalytic actions of enzymes. Enzymes are highly specific molecules, only one particular enzyme can fit each substrate molecule. The amino acids around the active site of the enzyme molecule attach to the substrate molecule and hold it in position while the reaction occurs. This makes the enzyme specific for one chemical reaction only, as other molecules won’t fit into the active site because their shape is wrong. Enzymes play a vital role in the chemical processes of metabolism. Some enzymes help to break down nutrient molecules like proteins and fat, into smaller molecules. This process occurs during the digestion of food. Other enzymes guide the brokendown molecules through the intestinal wall and into the blood stream. Enzymes are also responsible for a multitude of other functions, including but not limited to; the storage and release of energy, the processes of respiration and the course of reproduction.
