-First sighting of the platypus was in 1797 on the banks of a lake near Hawksbury River in NSW. -Damage of habitat due to human intervention (dams, irrigation, pollution, netting and trapping) -reduction to one species living on the east coast of australia due to climate and resulting environmental changes, as the Australian continent moved north over the years, the previously wet interior of the continent dried up, restricting the species to the wet east coast. - The Riversleigh area (where Obdurodon dicksoni was found) during the early to middle Miocene would have been a mosaic of lakes, pools and caves in a karst (limestone) environment. -Lightning Ridge (where Steropodon galmani was found) in the Early Cretaceous was close to the Antarctic Circle, therefore had extreme exposure to daylight during winter and summer months.
