Society in New Kingdom Egypt to the death of Amenhotep III BAND 6 STUDY NOTES!!! • Nile River flows North • Cataracts: divisions (very rocky outcroppings) within the water. Ships cannot easily get past them. • 20 kilometres either side of the river is the territory where Egyptians could sustain life. • All the tombs, cemeteries and mortuary temples are on the western side of the river, where the sun sets. In the land of the living (the eastern side of the river) is where all the temples are. • Black land (Khemet)– along the river (so named because of the silt that rests there when the river floods – inundation) Inundation is important because it is essential for crop growing and living and also provided a sense of regularity. They measured the months and seasons around the inundation of the Nile. When the Nile floods, the Pharaoh has successfully maintained Ma’at. To ensure this during his reign he needs to build temples and barque (boat – major means of transport) shrines and make offerings. To the Egyptians, their environment becomes their mindset, creates their conceptual way of life and their religious foundations.
