While Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (560 BC to 330 BC), was razed to the ground by Alexander the Great’s army, this site is still of great value as it provides a precious wealth of information on the religion, politics and economy of the empire during the reign of Xerxes (486 BC to 465 BC). Despite the destruction of many of Persepolis’ artefacts and buildings leading to contestability in some aspects of the empire, thereby limiting Persepolis’ value as a historical source, the available evidence overwhelmingly places the site of Persepolis as a vastly important historical source to be considered when studying the Achaemenid Empire under Xerxes’ rule.
