The research regarding the social media usage and mental health is mixed and varied, however social media usage has been found to pose a risk to adolescent and emerging adults mental health. Social media usage can help adolescents and emerging adults find support and opportunities to network with others that they may not have in real life, however there are negative impacts associated with social media usage on mental health. The research shows that increased amount of time spent on social media and SNS by adolescent and emerging adults increases the risk of mental health problems. However, a lot of the research focuses only on Facebook as a SNS, indicating the need for more research regarding different types of SNS and their risk and impact on adolescent and emerging adult mental health problems.
