received 17/20. Week 1: Predator Criminals as Media Icons, Ray Surette The manipulation of the media has created a societal view that predator crime is worse than what is the objective reality. This is known as the empirical reality of predator crime. Predatory murders by strangers compromises of about one fourth of all murders (Surette, 1994, p.139). Empirical reality is an important concept when it comes to how the public view serious crime and criminals as it is a symbolic reality of what is happening in our objective reality. With the media providing misleading information that causes unnecessary panic and fear within society. With the exposure of misleading information on predatory crime the public can become too scared to walk on the street or do other usual daily activities due to having a fear of possibly being attacked. According to Surette (1994), predatory criminal events are infrequent, however predator criminality dominates our criminal image. Symbolic interactionism is the sociological paradigm that best fits into Surette’s article. According to Bessett & Watts (2007), Herbert Blumer (1900-87), highlighted that human beings construct their social reality via the social interactions they have. Mass media play a critical role in the social construction of reality as it provides an understanding of many social phenomena and it is acquired only through the media rather than direct experiences (Surette,1994). If we believe all that media tells us our views will be based on symbolic reality over objective reality.
