There are several different theories in psychology explain the criminal behavior. This essay will use one of the psychological theories, which is called “social leaning theory” to explain the criminal behavior of a famous Australian criminal Mark Brandon Read. Firstly, “social learning theory” and the three dimensions in attributional process in social psychology will be explained. In addition, the biases in attribution theory will be discussed. Furthermore, the three stages in social learning, which are acquisition, instigation and regulation, will be examined with Read’s case. The essay also argues that there are two weaknesses in the cognitive disengagement theory as two of Read’s criminal behaviors cannot be explained.
