Sample Text:
Malaria is a vector-borne disease that is said to be increasing as a result of one environmental crisis, climate change (Fernando, 2010). The prevalence of malaria is dependant on geo-climatic factors such as temperature, humidity and rainfall, that affect the survival of its vectors and therefore the transmission of the disease (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). The purpose of this essay is to discuss the link between malaria and the environmental determinant, climate change. Malaria is a vector-borne disease, responsible for the deaths of over 400,000 people each year (World Health Organization, 2016). The protozoan disease is transmitted year-round by Anopheles m...

Malaria and Climate Change

Griffith University - 1205MED - Health Challenges for the 21st Century

Malaria is a globally recognised disease, which has had a greater impact on our world’s history, effecting the outcomes of wars, movements and development (White, Pukrittayakameem, Hein, Faiz, Mokuolu and Dondorp, 2014). The dynamics and distribution of Malaria is commonly associated with many environmental determinants; however, climate change is a key determinant that will be focused on throughout this essay. Climate change is associated with temperature, humidity and rainfall as these determinants are all essential to the transmission of the parasite dynamics, as well as the mosquito vector (Paul and Michael, 2010). The effects of climate change will be further explored in respect to the increasing prevalence of Malaria in developed and developing countries.

1205MED Tuberculosis

This student studied:
Griffith University - 1205MED - Health Challenges for the 21st Century

The tuberculosis global epidemic is larger than previously estimated and serves as a significant health challenge for the 21st century (World Health Organisation, 2016). In 2015, 1.8 million people died from tuberculosis globally (WHO, 2016), and 95% of these deaths occurred in low to middle income countries (Zürcher et al., 2016). There is a long history of documented linkages between tuberculosis and poor living conditions (Kashyap et al., 2016), and special attention must be focused towards improving these conditions to reduce the tuberculosis epidemic (WHO, 2005). It is important to firstly understand tuberculosis, to secondly recognise impacts of poor living conditions, to completely comprehend how this environmental determinant affects tuberculosis.
