Essay Outline - Are Offender Profiles Useful in Police Investigations

1011CCJ - Criminology Skills

3 Pages Griffith University Essay / Project Year Uploaded: 2018

Are offender profiles useful in police investigations.I.INTRODUCTION a. HOOK: Offender profiling is technique that has been increasingly used in Police investigations to predict the personality and characteristics of criminal offenders (Crabbe, Decoene & Vertommen, 2008). It is used to aid police in finding an unknown offender using information gathered from a crime scene as well as the victim (Muller, 2011). The issue is that there is not a great deal of empirical evidence to suggest that offender profiling adds any value to the sufficiency in carrying out Police investigations b. CLAIM: This essay argues that offender profiles are not useful in police investigations c. PLAN: The negative feedback from police officers in regards to profiling outweighs the positives, the offender profiles are too broad and don’t provide enough insight to investigations, and offender profiles are strongly based on assumptions and previous offender criminal behaviour and characteristics.
