Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) is established as a highly effective weight loss surgery, that is prescribed consequential to an inability to achieve a sustained weight loss through independant dietary efforts, to increase quality and mortality of life. The target audience for this surgery is directed towards people with morbid obesity (BMI greater than 40) (1). People who may additionally consider undergoing RYGB are relative to those with health issues and a BMI of between 35-40 such as type 2 diabetes and other comorbid conditions (2). RYGB is considered the ‘gold standard’ procedure as it is the only available surgical interventions in obesity related morbidity and mortality, apart from the vertical sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding (1) and has been proven to be the safest and most effective long term (3).
