Diverse cities such as Canberra face the complex challenge of creating a city based on different values as well as balancing these with the economic and environmental effects these values hold. However due to new and innovative ways of further developing the Canberra region an equilibrium has been created in the new sustainable area of Gininderry. Before looking into the future of sustainable urban development it is critical to reflect on the past and what issues have arisen to insure that new developments are not only have economic significance but also reflect a deep understanding of the environment, the people and also the traditional owners of the land. Throughout Canberra’s history Stirling park or Westlake as it was previously known holds significance for many people from residence to the tourist who visit the area. However it has a rich history of inequity and battles between the government and the people. Early history of Canberra tells of the land being reserved for a prime minister’s estate and poor families but more recently for diplomatic residencies with an extension onto the park from a neighboring embassy. In this case the governmental developers did not take into consideration the stake holders of the land who did not just see it as a piece of property but as holding great significance.
